How we hosted an Enchanted Harry Potter inspired party

We threw a Harry Potter themed party for my son’s 13th birthday that was just for the 5 of us at home in locked down 2020 in Melbourne. We dressed up in costume, ate lots of Harry Potter-themed food and binge-watched Harry Potter movies in the lounge room where we set up a large movie projector screen over the fireplace.

Props and decor

Pretty much everything is eco friendly in that I reused lots and lots of props that we have collected over the years to create this fun theme!  These are items that I have collected from op shops, antique stores, found on the roadside (vintage suitcases & birdcage) or inherited from grandparents along with toys from the children’s beds and books from the bookshelf, candlesticks and plants from various places around the house!

The costumes

We have had a few Harry Potter themed birthdays in our house over the years, so items like the costumes and sorting hat, etc have been used over and over again.  I also hire them out for other people’s parties too and I’ve been lucky enough to collect a number of items that people have used as a one-off for a party and then they’ve gifted them to me to reuse!!

The backdrop

I made the brick wall fabric at the back years ago using some bedsheets I found at the op shop, along with some red paint, a sponge and a stencil I made using a cereal box!

The potion bottles in the back of a few of the photos are brown glass bottles that I then added labels that I printed at home.

The food and drinks

I used bamboo straws for the drinks of butterbeer which are reusable and we use them often! We also used our own glassware and tableware rather than using plastic or single-use paper cups & plates.  I also love using a drink dispenser for drinks to save purchasing lots of bottles of drink!  You might see the “gillywater” in the photo behind the butterbeer.

We also had Golden snitches made from Ferrero Rocher chocolates, Professor Sprout’s vegetable garden– which were chopped up veggies, chocolate-coated jelly frogs as chocolate frogs, Jelly snakes for jelly slugs, chips for dragon scales & Fresh fruit for Forbidden Forest Fruit. These were all set up with food tent labels and tasted delicious!

A bit about Emma from Frog, Goose & Bear

Parties have been Emma’s passion for as long as she can remember. As a 7-year-old, she could be found with her trusty spiral-bound notebook excitedly writing down ideas for her next birthday party, the day after the last one had finished!

This love led her to start her own small party biz in Melbourne called Frog, Goose & Bear, named after her three children, where she provides fun custom elements for parties as well as event styling and party hire!  Her 16-year-old daughter, Goose, is an amazing artist and helps design unique graphics that are incorporated throughout all of her parties!
